Dear Valued Customer,

As our team at Safe Home™ prepares for the coming holidays, we would also like to take this opportunity to say Thank You! We are looking forward to spending time with our friends and families and hope you are too. We value your business and strive to meet your safety and preparedness needs. We hope you have wonderful and relaxing holidays, and with the New Year approaching, why not consider some useful safety tips?

Food Safety

  • Fully cook meats and poultry and thoroughly wash raw vegetables and fruits to eliminate bacteria.
  • Never put a spoon used to taste food back into food without washing it.
  • Make sure to wash your hands frequently, especially when working with multiple types of food.
  • Always keep raw foods and cooked foods separate. Use separate utensils when preparing them.
  • Thaw meat in the refrigerator, not on the countertop.
  • Foods that require refrigeration should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours.

Tree Safety

  • Look for the label "Fire Resistant" when purchasing an artificial tree.
  • Make sure a live tree is fresh before you bring it home.  It should be green and its needles should be hard to pull from branches. When bent between your fingers, needles should not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree should be sticky with sap. When tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.
  • Do not set up the tree near any open flame, space heater, or radiator.
  • Help the tree stay hydrated by cutting a few inches from the trunk to expose fresh wood.
  • Heated rooms can dry out live trees rapidly. Make sure the tree has plenty of water at all times.
Light Safety
  • Check all tree lights for frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
  • Do not use electric lights on a metal tree. A faulty wire could lead to electrocution by touching the tree.
  • Only hang certified outdoors lights outside.
  • Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could start a fire.
Traveling Tips
  • Plan ahead! Check travel routes and weather ahead of time.
  • If possible, travel during the daytime.
  • Carry a cell phone for emergencies.
  • Keep doors locked when driving and maintain at least a half tank of gas.
  • Bring a "Breakdown Kit" including jumper cables, flares, blanket, flashlight, and other emergency items.
  • Know how to replace a tire! Make sure you have a spare, carjack, and other emergency tools.
  • Devote your full attention to driving! Avoid distractions such as eating, cell phones, and sleepiness. Stop for coffee or rest if you get drowsy.
  • Take frequent breaks to stretch your legs and promote good circulation.
