Body composition analysis tells how much body weight is fat or muscle. High percentages of body fat increase risks for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, etc. The two most common home body health analyzers are BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) and BMI (body mass index). BIA gives a body fat percentage by sending a low electrical impulse (that you'll not feel) through your body. The impulse transmission ease relates to the fat percentage. More accurate BIA devices require input of athlete or regular build, male or female, weight, and height. Take measurements at the same time of day. BMI is an equation numerically rating your health based on height and weight. Your BMI number is compared to research statistics linking BMI numbers to medical and health issues such as heart disease and diabetes. Use a chart, device or scale with a BMI option. Lumiscope and Omron have portable BIA units. The Lumiscope 1251 is pocket sized, analyzes body fat, gives a BMI, has a functional calorie counter and generates a fitness plan. Underweight, healthy, slightly overweight, overweight and obese are body type choices. The Omron HBF-306 with athlete and non-athlete modes measures both BIA and BMI. Tanita and Seca offer combination units with weight scales. Prices are about $30 for a portable unit to almost $1000 for a BMI scale. Pedometers, pulse meters and blood pressure monitors help with personal fitness goals. See our body fat measuring devices 3. Keep tabs on your blood pressure: February is American Heart Month High and low blood pressures require monitoring. Self-monitoring lets you choose when and where to test. Fully automatic blood pressure monitors are simple to use and accurate if you properly position your wrist or arm at heart level. Manual units with inflation bulb and stethoscope require more skill for accurate readings. Most physicians recommend self-monitoring in between visits. We sell wrist and arm units by Lumiscope, Omron, Hyundai and Forecare. Monitoring helps to identify "white coat hypertension" i.e. when increased readings occur at the sight of a nurse or doctor's white coat. Also it helps assess medication response and compliance and effects of weight loss and exercise. Safe Home Products' guide helps you choose the monitor to meet your needs. Click here for the guide. All blood pressure monitors we sell meet or exceed government standards for accuracy. Do take your monitor to your health practitioner to check measurements against their unit. Monitor your blood pressure as you become more fit 4. Radon testing: Lung cancer prevention without special diets or exercise January was National Radon Action Month. Indoor and outdoor radon levels fluctuate from house to house and day to day even in the same town. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas produced as uranium and thorium break down. The second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the USA, radon and radiation exposures are impossible to avoid completely. Radiation comes from the natural environment as well as from radioactivity in our own bodies. Generally, high levels of radon are associated with granite igneous rocks, shale and dirty quartz sedimentary rocks, phosphate deposits and some beach sands. Soil is the major source of radon. Pressure-driven flow drives radon from the soil into buildings. Pressure inside buildings is usually lower than in the soil, especially in the winter. The most vulnerable houses are those with no barrier between soil and the interior, those with a dirt basement floor or crawl space. Older homes with porous concrete block or fieldstone foundations offer a minimal barrier to radon gas. Radon seeps through joints, cracks, sumps and drains even in homes with poured concrete basement floors and foundations. Radon is constantly escaping from the ground, so it is always in the air. Limited air movement and slow exchange with outside air can cause radon concentrations in a building to be significantly greater than outside air. The big risk is that as radon decays inside a building, the concentration of radioactive particles in the lungs increases, too. Combine high concentrations of radon gas in soils with high transport efficiency (i.e. loose, porous, dry soil) and elevated radon concentrations occur in buildings. Are you at risk? View the EPA radon map of the USA. Have you tested your home? How often? How long? Safe Home Products sells the first EPA evaluated and approved residential radon monitor, the Safety Siren Pro 3 Radon Gas Monitor. Family Safety Products released this newest model in late 2005. The unit is made in Michigan, USA. This is a continuous monitor unlike a canister test or professional several day test. Move it around and check various places in your home. Temperature, time of year, humidity, home construction - all cause radon levels to vary. Take a Look at our New Continuous Radon Monitor 5. Don't let the flu or colds catch you without the right stuff! Self-care for illnesses requires the right equipment. Checking body temperature, checking ears and taking medicines on time are important. Is your temperature abnormal? Is it time to see a physician? Safe Home Products sells a wide variety of diagnostic and monitoring devices including thermometers, otoscopes, nebulizers (by prescription), nebulizer parts, medication timer boxes, and Earchecks (monitors for middle ear fluid). We ship promptly. The Right Stuff for Home Health Care 6. And now for protecting your health using a hammer, screwdriver, or an electrical outlet If your natural gas, propane gas or carbon monoxide monitors are more than five years old (or if you have none), this section is for you. Sensors in gas monitors last a maximum of 5 years IF not damaged by exposure to aerosols or other contaminants. Combustible gas monitors and carbon monoxide alarms use different sensors. Gas monitors react to raw fuel leaks; carbon monoxide alarms react to carbon monoxide, a by-product of incomplete combustion. Combustible gasses rarely smother people. A spark from closing a door or using a light switch can set off an explosion or a fire if the raw gas fumes are high. UL 1484 listed gas alarms are gas explosion/fire prevention devices, not gas leak detectors. They sound loud alarms well before dangerous levels are reached ONLY if they are installed near gas appliances. Although most fatalities result from fires, about one third of the deaths come from stoves, portable heaters, and automobile exhaust. No one can be vigilant 24 hours a day and carbon monoxide is odorless. Safe Home Products offers several brands of UL listed gas and CO monitors with 85 dB alarms. Use a single nail or two screws to mount CO and gas alarms. Insert an AC gas or CO alarm into several un-switched electrical outlets. Save your life and your health. Protection while you snooze or are awake 7. Let's work together for better health and safety in 2006 It is our pleasure to fulfill your health, safety and personal comfort needs.
