Spring is here. Rain showers cycle sump pumps on and off. Trees are budding. With spring comes a need for weather stations and weather alert radios as tornados like the ones that hit Iowa City two weeks ago are spawned. (Luckily, we were not hit.) As we leave our hibernation mode, so do moles and other nuisance critters.

2. Do It Yourself Health Tests: Inexpensive, Accurate & Time-Saving
Health insurance generally limits lab test types and frequencies. Be proactive about your health. Monitor cholesterol as you change your diet and exercise regimens. Diabetics, monitor your glucose management. Biosafe blood tests are FDA approved. Certified labs analyze all but the home anemia test. Physicians review results. And you get a report with numerical results and a insurance reimbursement code in the mail a few days later.
Testing is easy. Stick prick a finger, add a few drops of blood to the collection plate and mail an envelope with the specimen. The anemia test develops in minutes at home.

3. Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary. How Does Your Garden Grow?
Mary probably faced the same pests you do. Preventing foraging and animal destruction is easier than stopping it. No single device protects against all outdoor varmints and birds. Repellents and scare devices include powered units (AC or battery), scent repellents and visual and sound scare devices.
- Powered devices include mole stakes (battery or solar powered), ultrasonic and sonic harassment or distress sound devices, and a device combining water and scare, the water scarecrow.
- 21st century Mole Repellers are buried in the ground. Choices are solar power (not mow over) units or the metal or plastic cylinder units that use 4 D cells. The buried units are barely audible. All are barely audible to humans as they vibrate or generate sound waves. Keep burrowing rodents outside your territory.
- Harassment or distress sound devices range from the Yardgard for small animals to the Bird-X devices that target particular types of birds such as ravens, sparrows or gulls. Effectiveness depends upon placement, volume, continuous or intermittent operation and use with barriers, scare devices or roost repellers.
- The Water Scarecrow combines battery power, sensors and a water spray. Proven effective against deer, dogs, cats and more, one customer saved his yard by lining the perimeter with them.
- Scent repellents evoke fear and flight responses. We've just added the safe, non-toxic Deer Fortress that conveniently hangs or stakes where you need it. Deer smell it. Humans cannot. Protected in its holder, the Deer Fortress won't wash away and works for an entire growing season. Liquid Scoot and Shake Away granules are targeted to deer, small animals or moles.
- Scare devices include Terror Eyes, Prowler Owl and Irri-Tape. Mount the Terror Eyes orange ball the wind bounces it. Most birds will stay away. Light bouncing off the Irri-Tape streamers hung in trees or on poles and the rattling noise also repel birds.

4. Enjoy the Beauty of Spring and Other Seasons Without Misery
Sufferers of allergic rhinitis, nasal allergies, welcome warmer weather with tissues wadded in pockets. Proactive folks start antihistamines and nasal sprays in advance and stay inside when pollen counts are high. Animal dander, pollen, molds, dust and dust mites as common "triggers" for nasal allergies.
- Pets: Can cause runny noses and even asthma attacks. Wipe pets daily with a damp microfiber cloth. Wash pets weekly. Wash bedding often if they sleep with you.
- Dust Mites: Cause nasal allergies and chronic sinusitis. In 2004, Mayo researchers showed that chronic sinusitis is an immune disorder caused by fungus that multiply in dust mite infested mattresses and pillows.
- Inside Air: Airborne dust and contaminants aggravate allergies. Air cleaners help.
- Outside Air: After being outside on a high pollen day, take a shower, wash your hair and change clothes.
Allergy proofing of beds and pillows requires barriers to dust mites and fungi. The effect of powders and sprays is short-lived. Protect-A-Bed covers are FDA classified as Class 1 medical devices. The mattress and box spring covers are elasticized, stain resistant, absorbent, generously cut, barriers to allergens. Covers go on like fitted sheets. Sizes range from crib through California King. Continuous use of the fan keeps the HEPA dry. Damp HEPA is a medium that grows mold and fungi. A SurroundAir XJ-2100, a negative ionizer with fan, sweetens and purifies the air.
In my family room, an Envirosept Console air cleaner runs 24/7 on low speed. The main furnace has a 4 inch HEPA filter and a Solaire UV/Ozone air purifier keep ducts sanitary.

5. Quieting the Dogs in Your Yard or Your Neighbors.'
With winter over, people are busy doing yard work and opening windows to air out their homes. (We hope window guards and window stops protect your windows.) For millions of people around the world, warm weather means lost sleep or feeling harrassed or violated by constant or intermittent nuisance barking.
Two essentially mute Boston Terriers live with me. Two quick pushes on a Dog Dazer, ultrasonic dog corrector, and Maggie stops her rare barking. Every day, Safe Home Products' customer service reps hear or get email from desperate people dealing with nuisance barking problems. Our customer service staff asks customers these questions:
- Are the dogs within 25 to 50 feet of your home or fence.?
- If there is a fence, is it chain link or does it have an opening several inches across?
- Can you aim a device at the dogs' head level?
If the answers are yes, Safe Home Products recommends the ultrasonic barking cessation units that work about 90% of the time. Most dogs with normal hearing who are not kenneled with many dogs stop barking in hours or days after they learn that barking causes unpleasant sounds. Some dogs take weeks to learn. A few dogs never learn.
