Dear Valued Customer,

The holidays are almost here. We appreciate your loyalty throughout the years and apologize you’ve heard little from Safe Home® for a few months. We’ve been busy adding new products for health, safety and better living. We now offer more than 130,000 products on our website!

Here are a few safety tips for a healthier and safer holiday season.

Flood Alarms

Reduce risks of water damage with stand-alone water alarms. Place alarms such as the Gizmode Alarm or the Flood Detective near washing machines, sinks or the toilets that your children or grandchildren are more likely to flush after using too much toilet paper!

If you want a very loud alarm or need protection in a basement area, add the new Gizmode Water Screamer with the 130 decibel alarm.

Temperature Guards

Snowbirds, protect your home before you head South. Install a remote monitor for your home. Choices include a TemperatureGuard remote monitor VM-500-3 with adjustable temperature limits down to 35 degrees F or a more basic Homeguard VM-500-2 that let your know when temperatures fall below 45 degrees F. Both TemperatureGuard models alert you of power failures and both require a land phone line. The new DeluxeFreezeAlarm can use a land line or a cell phone if you add the adapter. Optional accessories include WaterSiren water alarms with dry contacts and detachable sensor pads, a CybePower surge suppressor battery back up power supply and MiniAlarm Motion Sensor intruder alarms.

Smoke and Gas Alarms

Test smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and natural gas/propane alarms. Install fresh batteries in battery powered alarms and in your HVAC thermostat. Check dates of manufacture: older CO alarms lack a sensor failure feature. Replace out-dated alarms. Add combustible gas detector/alarms near every gas using appliance for protection against fires and explosions: carbon monoxide and smoke alarms do not detect raw gas leaks. Check out the Costar 9RV Home and RV Carbon Monoxide Alarm as well as the Safety Siren Pro and Safe-T Alert Propane Natural Gas Alarm. 40-411-120V,Safe-T-Alert, gas detector, alarm, GasAware, methane, home safety, natural gas monitor, propane, sewer, septic, detectors, dector, natural gas equipment, natural gas measurement

National Child Safety Month!

  Safe Home Products Logo
  Toll-free (877) 358-0900 www.safehomeproducts.com

Dear Valued Customer,

Did you know that November is National Child Safety Month? This month, take time to review the needs and safety of the children in your life.  Sadly, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children under the age of fourteen, and many injuries happen at home. By making small changes in your home, or the homes of your loved ones, you can lower the chance of injury.

Safe Home Products® has a multitude of safety items that you can use to protect your loved ones.
Child Safety items make great gifts for baby showers or for expecting parents during the holidays.

The following is a list of products to child-proof stairways, cabinets, and home appliances. More safety products are available in our Child Safety section.

Clear Plastic Indoor Banister Guard

Falls cause 1/3 of ER visits for children under the age of 14. The curious nature and small size of children, make them vulnerable to falling down steps. Adding Stairway gates and Banister guards can block your child's access to stairways. The Clear Plastic Indoor Banister Guard stops children from attempting to squeeze through railings. In addition, the clear plastic is barely visible and it is easy to install. This guard is 5 ft. by 33 in. Additional sizes are available on our website.

Cabinet Door and Drawer Lock

Approximately 9 out of 10 poison incidents occur in the home (www.safekids.org). Common household products such as pesticides, cleaning supplies, and cosmetics, can be dangerous to children. Cabinet door and drawer locks keep children away from these harmful products.

Dishwasher Locking Strap

It is also important to keep children from opening the dishwasher. Hot water, steam, and dishwasher detergent are harmful to children if they open the machine before it finishes its cycle. This locking strap is easy to install, and simple for adults to open. Other child proofing locks include: Washer and Dryer Locking Strap, The Fridge Guard, and the Multi-Use Locking Strap.

3. BonaKemi's complete microfiber dusting system with Big Bend

Yes, I meant Big Bend, not Big Ben (the nickname for the Westminster Clock). BonaKemi's latest contribution to easier housecleaning is this all white microfiber dusting system with the Big Bend dusting wand.

The Big Bend is a bendable, extendable microfiber dusting wand with two soft, white fluffy pile sleeves with fibers almost an inch long. Each sleeve is 25" long x 4" wide. Slide a clean sleeve over the wand and telescope the sturdy pole to reach up to 14 feet. Use straight or bend for ceiling fans, high ledges or for under furniture on hard surfaced floors. Wash and reuse over 300 times.

For dusting furniture or washing knick-knacks, use the 9.5 inch long Starfiber microfiber mitten or the Starfiber Microplus 12 inch square cloth. Use wet or dry.

Cleaning doesn't get much easier than this if you add a BonaKemi Microplus mop for hard surfaced floors and showers. $37.95 plus shipping. Contact us for quantity discounts.

Cannot stand the mess any longer? It's time for the durable high-impact molded resin Wire Mate in white, black or gray. The Wire Mate organizes up to 18 wires and cables reducing clutter and tangles. Easily mounted on any flat surface.

Includes base and cover (no other parts to assemble or break), adhesive and screws.
Unit dimensions: 14"L X 8" W X 2 "H. Weight: 1.12 lbs. Price $19.95 plus shipping.

Click to reduce wire tangles in your life

5. Control allergies: prevent bacteria and dustmites from breeding in your pillow and mattress

Protect-A-Bed is effective at preventing bacteria and dustmites from breeding in your pillow & mattress (a major cause of asthma, eczema and rhinitis). Protect-A-Bed keeps bodily fluids from soiling pillows or mattresses by providing a water proof barrier beneath a comfortable soft cotton covering. Also provides a sanitary barrier between you and whatever was left in or on the mattress by the last person in your rental apartment.

Super absorbent cotton laminated to soft, thin polyurethane means soft, quiet protection. Pillows remain comfortable. Not noisy like thick vinyl. Lightweight design means fast drying time. Classified as Class 1 Medical Device by the FDA and Health Canada. Wash hundreds of times.

In sizes to fit all beds including extra long twin and California king and all sizes of pillows. Enjoy down or feather pillows without risking allergic reactions. Prices start at $16.95 plus shipping.

Click to keep your bedding clean and hygienic

6. We added Cardinal Gates to our safety products' line!

For some time, we've sold the Cardinal Gates' line of protective hearth and edge padding. At the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas, I examined their line of child and pet gates. After comparing them with those from other manufacturers, I decided to add them to our product line.

These gates were the most versatile and the most sturdy I'd seen. They have numerous options for installation in almost every situation. The quality was great, just like the protective padding.

Choose steel gates for pet proofing or premium all aluminum systems for easily child proofing doorways, stairs or wide spans. There are no plastic parts. Tested and specifically designed for child safety, Cardinal Gates systems are the choice of professional baby proofers. The gates adhere to standards of JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association) and the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

These hardware mounted gates install quickly with a few screws at angles up to 30° for offset area or angled walls. The aluminum gates are black or white powder coated with a non-toxic, tough enamel finish. The one hand latch operation is simple for adults but puzzles toddlers. Choose a single or two way gate swing. Adults can quickly release the gate from mounts for special occasions.

A slide fit design means adjustment to the precise width needed from 27 inches to 42.5 inches.

Optional extensions and T-bar base: fill any length or span. Optional installation kits: banister post clamps, wrought iron mounting kits or all purpose dry wall kits. Use indoors or out.

Click for Cardinal Gates information

7. Protect your home from leaking appliances

This summer I purchased my first water dispensing refrigerator with a built-in ice maker. Back in 1989, I replaced my 18 year old refrigerator with a 25 ft top freezer model sans water and ice. I recalled a friend whose entire first floor was flooded one Sunday from a broken water line from his refrigerator.

Under my new frig is a twin probe Water Hound water sensor. Under my new dishwasher is a single probe Water Hound. If either unit leaks, it will sound a local 65 db alarm and instantly turn off the main water line via the WaterCop device.

If you want to protect only your washer, water heater, or refrigerator, consider the Floodstop units.

Happy holidays and thank you!

Thank you again for your patronage.

Summer Ideas and Savings

Dear Valued Customer,

We hope that you are having a great summer.  In this newsletter, we highlight some ideas to maximize summertime health and safety.  Read below for ideas on protecting children from accidents, keeping mosquitoes in check, and avoiding damage to your home during long vacations.

In this issue:
1. Save with Our Summer Catalog
2. Safer Backyards and Campsites: Don't Feed the Mosquitoes
3. Keep Children Safely Inside
4. Saving Energy & Protecting Children
5. Containing Water Problems & Keeping Your Insurance
6. Let Us Help You To Enjoy A Safer, Better Life

1. Take a look at our summer catalog and save on your next order

If you have not received a copy of our summer catalog, please download it online at http://www.safehomeproducts.com/SHP2/Catalog/SHP_Summer2006_lowres.pdf  It highlights popular products and contains a coupon code for savings on your next order.

2. Avoiding Encephalitis, West Nile & Allergic Reactions

Of the 27,000 species of mosquitoes, some give dogs heartworm, some prefer birds and many prefer humans. Annually over one million people die from mosquito borne diseases like West Nile virus, malaria and encephalitis. Billions of us bite victims struggle not to scratch the itchy bites.

Female mosquitoes need blood to lay eggs. They dine at dawn and dusk on warm blooded creatures they find via exhaled carbon dioxide and perspiration. How can we cope?
  • Wear clothing that covers most of your skin.
  • Apply DEET, picardin or oil of lemon eucalyptus repellents before and during outdoor activities.
  • Drain standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs.
  • Fix or replace broken window screen.
  • Use mosquito traps.
Noisy bug zappers are being replaced by more effective propane and electric mosquito traps. In a Consumers Report evaluation, the #2 ranked Lentek Mosquito Guardian Trap was a best buy for price and effectiveness.

Recently, I set up a Lentek Koolatron Guardian propane and electric mosquito trap in under 10 minutes.  Each month, I'll change the propane tank to keep the trap catching mosquito moms before they lay 100 to 300 eggs. Baby mosquitoes hatch and mature in 4 to 7 days.

The Lentek trap lures with carbon dioxide, moisture, blue light, uneven thermal heating and octenol attractant.  The fan pulls mosquitoes iinto the capture trap bag.

For mosquitoes who are not trapped, try the Itch Zapper to gently heat bites and relieve the stings.
3. Ventilate Safely When Children are Present

Window insect screens keep insects out.  Window security bars keep burglars out. Child safety window guards keep children in.  Our Guardian Angel guards  protect against window falls and  remove quickly in emergencies.

The National Safety Council recommends quick release window guards with a maximum 4 inch window opening. City codes often limit egress window guards to floors 1 - 6, within the reach of ladder trucks. Permanent guards are recommended for higher floors.

Safe Home Products® stocks most sizes of Guardian Angel window guards for windows that open up and down, slide open sideways or crank open. To remove guards, push on quick release buttons. Pull telescoping bars from mounts. Safe Home Products' new selection page helps customers order correct guards directly from our website.

Guardian Angel window guards are strong steel tubing powder coated with durable, lead-free white paint. Made in the USA, our window guards conform to American Society for Testing and Material standards and most local building codes.
4. Reduce Shock & Fire Hazards, Insulate & Protect Kids

When visiting Great Britain in the mid-80's, I first saw 240VAC outlets which I considered more dangerous than 120VAC. Maybe, maybe not. Hospital emergency rooms in the USA annually treat over 3,900 persons for injuries from 120VAC outlets. 1 of 3 victims are young children with injuries usually from putting metal objects like keys into outlet holes. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 5,300 fires annually occur from bad receptacles, resulting in about 40 deaths each year.

Outlets deteriorate with time and repeated use. If plugs fit loosely, the outlet may overheat and start a fire.

Safe Home Products' Safety Suggestions:
  • Yearly inspection. Replace damaged electrical outlets. Damaged outlets can be broken, feel hot, smoke or spark, or cause lamps to flicker or hold plugs loosely.
  • Switch off appliances before removing plugs from receptacles.
  • Unplug appliances by using the plug. Pulling on the cord at an angle can break away part of the plastic receptacle face leaving exposed live parts.
  • Insert plugs completely into receptacles.
  • Upgrade by installing ground fault circuit interrupters
  • Install CareCovers, the original USA made sliding door safety outlet cover, for safety and insulation.
My first CareCover was a gift from a neighbor in 1993. His uncle invented CareCovers, still made in South Dakota. These insulating CareCover outlet covers protect against electrical shocks with gaskets that reduce air loss or infiltration by 15% compared with standard covers.

Spring-loaded sliding doors automatically cover unused receptacle holes, those black receptacle holes so inviting to toddlers. The CareCover was selected for use by the National Institute of Children's Environments in "California Showcase."

Remodeling  or repainting? CareCovers come in white, off white, ivory, red or brown.  The only visible receptacle part is what extends beyond the plug. A screwdriver and less than a minute and the outlet color is changed.

NOTE: Only for 120VAC outlets. Three models fit 2 prong, 3 prong or 3 prong Decora electrical receptacles. These will not fit over GFCI outlets. Call for larger quantity discounts.

5. Avoiding Water Damage, Inconvenience & High Water Bills

Question: What is worse than damage, mold and water bills from a leaking water heater or ice maker line?  Answer: Your insurance company cancelling your policy or doubling rates due to the claim.

Water damage is the most common homeowners insurance claim. Major claims relate to toilet overflows, water heaters, shower pans, burst washing machine hoses and leaking air conditioning drain pans and condensation lines. Dishwashers and water and ice dispensing refrigerators are additional culprits.

Chubb Insurance surveyed home owners in Los Angeles in 2005 about water damage issues. More than 1 in 3  had water damage. Of those, 1 in 3 never inspect washing machines or toilets, about 2 in 3 never inspect water heaters, almost half of vacation home owners do not drain pipes and shut off water at the end of the season and only 3% have installed a moisture or water detection system. Half the respondents with water damage said insurance did not or covered only part of their damage.

Safe Home Products sells many types of Water Protection Systems. See us for  whole house water leak detection systems with optional remote water shut offs and a new generation of individual water appliance shut-offs.  Both the Water Cop and the Flood Stop devices use moisture sensors and ball valves so water flow is not restricted. Water Cop installation usually takes a plumber while Floodstop units for water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, ice makers, etc. are easy to install.

Another device, the  Flow Manager, is specifically designed to prevent toilet overflows and leaks. We also sell Flood Check washing machine hoses in 5 ft and 7 ft lengths that have a 20 year manufacturer's warranty against defects.
