Water

The single most important element of survival is clean water. People have survived without food for weeks, even months, but others have perished in one day due to lack of drinkable water. You have several options for assuring clean water for you and your family. The first is to get an Aquapod. It fits in your tub and stores up to two weeks of clean water, which should be plenty for your family to survive on until help arrives.

Another option is to purchase storable water packets. Mainstay makes a great kit of 60 individual 4.2 oz packs of drinking water. Consumption is two packs per day, so one kit provides a family of four enough water for over a week. Mainstay is U.S. Coastguard approved, and perfect for home, business, or marine survival kits.

Finally, consider an easily portable water purifier. A simple gravity feeder may be just what you need. CWR makes a great model that uses washable ceramic filters to clean up to two gallons of drinking water for your family. You can be assured that you will never run out of clean water. Plus, it's handy on long RV or camping trips where you want to be sure you'll never run out of water.

Food

While one may be able to survive for a period of time without food, even if you can survive, it will lead to fatigue and injury. It is a far safer bet to have food rations in order to keep strong and alert. Keep canned goods and energy on hand, as it will guarantee your family will have safe food to eat. You can also purchase a survival kit which include food rations. The Traveler Survival Kit has contains food and water rations, as well as basic first aid supplies and a survival manual. It all fits neatly into a travel case, keeping it out of the way and handy.

Light

In the event of a major disaster, it is almost certain that homes and businesses will lose power. Keep at least one flashlight in a place that you can access even in the dark. Black and Decker has a superior model for emergency situations that includes a weather tracker and a long-lasting LED light so you won't be left in the dark during harsh weather.

Power

If your area has lost city power, you will want a backup plan. Having a generator will take care of this issue. The Wagan 400 Watt Power Dome EX Power Pack provides you with all the crank power you need to power small to medium sized appliances. Plus, it includes an air compressor, AM/FM radio with iPod input, LED light, and AC outlets for your car. Toss one in your trunk and one in your basement, and you will have a reliable power source at home and on the road.

Dear Valued Customer,

You have probably noticed it. Coughs and sniffles are becoming more prevalent each day. That means that flu season is on its way. You can't run from it, but you can take steps to prevent flu infection. Below are three easy steps to help you and your family stay healthy this flu season.

Wash Your Hands!

The single most important way you can stay healthy this season is by consistently washing your hands. Germs can live for weeks on surfaces, which is why the flu is so communicable. If someone in your office with the flu sneezes into their hands, they will transfer flu germs to everything they touch until those germs are removed. The most effective method of ridding your hands of germs is plain old soap and water. Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water. With frequent hand washings, you will want to use something natural, like Kirk's Castile Soap, to prevent irritation. Between washings, squirt some hand sanitizer into your palms. In order to be effective, make sure you have enough sanitizer on your hands that they will be wet for 10-15 seconds. It will be enough to kill most of the germs on your hands.

Wear a Mask

According to the CDC, the flu is passed around mostly by people coughing and sneezing on each other. This is known as "droplet spread." Cold and flu droplets can be projected up to three feet, so it is airborne. During flu season's peak, which is Novemeber through March, consider wearing a mask when out in public. The Wein Antiflu Antiviral FitSeal Mask is great for this purpose. It's comfortable to wear, and is shaped to form a seal around the face assuring no germs get through.

Get a Flu Shot

Perhaps the most effective method against fighting the flu virus is to get a flu vaccination. It is a once-per-season shot that helps your body build a resistance to the flu virus. Each year, the type of flu that infects us is different. A flu shot is last year's flu. By getting the flu shot each season, your body will build a resistance and become inoculated to new flu strains.
